What Is Resveratrol?
Resveratrol is a naturally occurring polyphenol compound found in grapes, apples, berries, peanuts, and other plants and fruits. Resveratrol has been shown in numerous studies over the past 20 years to reduce or prevent a wide range of diseases, including cancer and cardiovascular disease.
Why Take Resveratrol?
- Antioxidant Properties: Resveratrol works as an antioxidant. Antioxidants can lessen the damage from free radicals, which can cause cancer, aging, and brain degeneration.
- Anti-Inflammatory Effects: Resveratrol can reduce inflammation in the body. Chronic inflammation is associated with various health conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, and cancer.
- Cardioprotective Effects: Some studies suggest that resveratrol has protective effects on the cardiovascular system. It may help improve cardiovascular health by improving the function of blood vessel linings, reducing cholesterol levels, and providing antiplatelet effects.
- Cancer Prevention: Resveratrol has been researched for its potential anti-cancer properties. It may interfere with the processes involved in the development and progression of cancer, including cell division and apoptosis (programmed cell death).
Why Is Vitamin D Important?
Research shows that almost 50% of all adults in the U.S. have a Vitamin D deficiency, especially throughout winter when sun exposure is limited. This deficiency can lead to health problems like muscle weakness or pain, fatigue, joint pain, and mood changes.
What Does Vitamin D Do?
- Bone Health: Vitamin D plays a vital role in regulating calcium and phosphorus levels in the body, which are essential for maintaining strong and healthy bones.
- Immune System Support: Vitamin D plays a vital role in the functioning of the immune system. It plays a role in immune responses and helps the body defend against infections and diseases.
- Mood and Mental Health: Adequate Vitamin D levels may contribute to mental well-being and could play a role in conditions such as depression and seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
- Muscle Function: Vitamin D is involved in muscle function and may help prevent muscle weakness and falls, particularly in older adults. This is important for overall mobility and reduces the risk of fractures.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not have any indications for the use of resveratrol, which is regarded as a dietary supplement. There haven't been any conclusive studies showing the proper dosages, applications, long-term safety, and effectiveness.
